In this insightful Alumni Talk session, we speak with Samyak Gaykwad, a Data Analyst and proud alumnus of DataMites. Samyak’s transformation from an electrical engineering graduate to a successful data analyst working in Pune showcases not only the power of upskilling but also the grit and persistence needed to break into the analytics domain.

Samyak’s Journey to Becoming a Successful Data Analyst

Samyak Gaykwad, a Btech graduate, shares his transformative journey from a beginner in data analytics to securing a role as a Data Analyst, offering valuable insights and tips for aspiring professionals.

Q1. Could you introduce yourself to our audience?

Samyak: I'm Samyak Gaykwad from Chandrapur, Maharashtra, currently based in Pune. I hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. After graduation, I joined DataMites to upskill in Data Analytics. I learned skills like SQL, Python, Excel, Machine Learning, and Power BI. After applying for three months, I received an offer and now work as a Data Analyst at CRIF.

Q2. What inspired you to choose a career in Data Analytics?

Samyak: In my final year of engineering, I had subjects related to Industry 4.0 that introduced me to data-related fields. I explored the domain further through YouTube and online resources, which led me to join DataMites and begin my data journey.

Q3. Which subjects did you enjoy the most and which did you find challenging?

Samyak: I really enjoy SQL and Power BI—especially writing queries and creating dashboards. Initially, I found advanced SQL and some parts of Python challenging, but with consistent practice, I overcame those difficulties.

Q4. What kind of projects helped you crack your interview?

Samyak: I completed three main projects during my DataMites Institute course, including one on Hospitality Analytics and another on Job Market Analysis. These helped me during interviews. I also picked up some Power BI and SQL projects from YouTube and added them to my resume.

Q5. Can you share your interview experience and the kind of questions you faced?

Samyak: I attended 7-8 interviews. Most questions were focused on SQL (basic to advanced) and Power BI project experience. They asked about challenges I faced, how I built dashboards, and DAX functions. A few interviews also included Excel (20% of the time) and Python basics, especially if coding knowledge was needed.

Q6. What’s your current role like at CRIF?

Samyak: I work in the delivery team of the Credit Bureau. My daily tasks involve creating SQL views, running them on the server, fetching data into tables, and delivering those data files to clients.

Q7. How did you plan your learning strategy?

Samyak: I used LinkedIn actively—connecting with HRs, data analysts, and posting my daily learnings. This visibility helped me get responses and even referrals. Consistency and networking were key.

Q8. How should students handle tough topics like SQL or Python?

Samyak: Focus on the advanced parts of SQL, like window functions, views, and stored procedures—since real-world datasets are large. With Power BI, understand DAX and visualization logic. If you're not into coding, like me, at least learn Python basics and theory.
