Shipla's Journey as a successful Data Analyst with Datamites
Shilpa's journey from a passionate learner to a successful Data Analyst is an inspiring story of determination and growth in the world of data analytics.
Q1: Can you tell us about your background and how you started your career?
Shilpa: Hello, everyone! My name is Shilpa GP, and I’m originally from Shimoga. I completed my Bachelor’s degree from JNC College, Shimoga. I had already been placed at Wipro before I joined DataMites, but due to some delays in getting the joining letter, I decided to explore DataMites. I wanted to expand my knowledge, especially in Power BI and machine learning. After completing my training, I joined Wipro, where I started my career as a Data Analyst.
Q2: What sparked your interest in becoming a Data Analyst?
Shilpa: I’ve always had a passion for machine learning and AI. Initially, I pursued machine learning because I was interested in artificial intelligence. But as I explored data analytics, I realized that it was a perfect fit for me. Unlike coding-heavy roles, data analytics involves a lot of problem-solving and working with data, which I find exciting. That’s when I decided to pursue a career as a Data Analyst.
Q3: What was your favorite subject or topic in the Data Science course?
Shilpa: My favorite topic has to be SQL (Structured Query Language). I find it very interesting and enjoyable to work with. It’s essential for managing and querying databases, and I love using it in my daily tasks. I also really enjoyed Power BI, especially creating dashboards and visualizing data effectively. SQL was the first part of my job at Wipro, and it set the foundation for my work in Power BI after a few months.
Q4: How did you overcome the challenges you faced during the course?
Shilpa: Coding was initially a challenge for me. I struggled with remembering the syntax and understanding the scenarios. But I stayed focused by listening to the classes carefully, referring to videos, and using the LMS portal for additional help. I practiced every day and worked on understanding the concepts by searching for explanations online. Over time, this approach helped me overcome the difficulties I faced.
Q5: Can you share your tips for preparing for interviews?
Shilpa: The first thing I would advise is to stay confident. It’s okay if you don’t know every answer, but always remain calm and confident in your responses. When preparing for interviews, focus on the tools and languages relevant to the job you’re applying for, such as SQL and Power BI. It’s also helpful to practice coding and understand the core concepts. In my interviews, questions related to SQL queries and Power BI dashboard creation were common. You should also be prepared to answer machine learning-related questions, such as classification algorithms and their applications.
Q6: How did you manage your time while balancing your studies and work?
Shilpa: Time management was crucial for me. I planned my schedule around my classes, dedicating one to two hours daily to study. After work, I made sure to review what I learned in class and expand on it. Additionally, I applied for different roles, such as Python Developer and Machine Learning Engineer, to keep learning and improving my skills. Time management allowed me to stay focused and balanced my professional and learning goals effectively.
Q7: What is it like working as a Data Analyst?
Shilpa: I absolutely enjoy working as a Data Analyst. Unlike other technical roles, the work doesn’t require a lot of coding. Instead, I focus on data visualization and analysis, which is very fulfilling for me. I love creating dashboards and presenting data in a meaningful way. I also find the challenges in analyzing data and solving real-world problems very engaging. My daily work is rewarding, and I feel like I’m making a difference by helping businesses make informed decisions.
Q8: Can you describe the interview process and the type of questions you were asked?
Shilpa: The interview process focused heavily on SQL, Power BI, and basic machine learning concepts. I was asked to create a Power BI dashboard and explain the reasoning behind choosing categorical or numerical data. SQL-related questions, like the difference between various DML and DDL commands, were also common. Additionally, I was asked machine learning-related questions, such as how to classify data and the different types of algorithms used. These questions helped the interviewers gauge my technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
Q9: What advice would you give to students preparing for their first job as a Data Analyst?
Shilpa: Stay confident and be patient with yourself. It’s okay not to know everything. Focus on learning the basics of SQL, Power BI, and Python, and practice daily. Build projects that demonstrate your skills, as hands-on experience is key. Also, prepare thoroughly for interviews by focusing on the core skills and knowledge required for the job. Lastly, remember that your journey will take time, so stay motivated and trust the process.
