From Biology to Data Analytics: Poojitha’s Success Story
Discover how Poojitha transitioned from a biology background to an emerging career as a Data Analyst, sharing valuable insights, challenges, and tips for aspiring professionals in the field.
Q1: Hi Poojitha! Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into Data Science?
A: Sure! I come from a biology background in high school. While exploring unconventional options apart from engineering, a family friend introduced me to Data Science. I was intrigued and eventually pursued a Bachelor’s in Statistics and a Master’s in Data Science. During the COVID lockdown, I came across a webinar by Ashok Sir and learned about DataMites, which led me to enroll in their course.
Q2: Was it easy to pick up programming tools like Python and SQL, especially since you weren’t from a Computer Science background?
A: It was a challenge initially because I had no programming exposure. But DataMites Institute trained us from the basics, even starting with how to install the necessary software. Over time, I got the hang of Python and SQL.
Q3: What’s your typical day like as a Data Analyst?
A: My work revolves around gathering, preprocessing, and analyzing data. It’s exciting and hands-on. Once you understand the tools and concepts, it becomes a lot more manageable and even fun!
Q4: How was your interview experience for the Data Analyst role?
A: It was a smooth process with four rounds—technical, logical reasoning, and communication. They focused on basics in Python, SQL, and Statistics. Most SQL questions were use-case-based, and Python had a mix of basic and slightly advanced questions.
Q5: What part of the DataMites course did you enjoy the most?
A: I really enjoyed the data preprocessing module—it’s an essential and interesting part of the data analysis pipeline.
Q6: What advice would you give to freshers aspiring to become Data Analysts?
A: Stay open-minded and be ready to learn continuously. Don’t restrict yourself to just Python or SQL. Focus on mastering the basics across all domains—statistics, computer science, and math. Every interview evaluates your core understanding first.

Q7: Did you work on any extra projects or platforms apart from the DataMites assignments?
A: Yes, participating in online hackathons and using platforms with compilers was helpful. These platforms correct your mistakes and help build practical experience—even if you don’t win.
Q8: How did you manage your time between your Master’s and interview prep?
A: I would study for an hour after college focusing on basics. Recruiters mostly test your fundamental knowledge, so I prioritized that. Showing willingness to learn during interviews is also key.
Q9: How important is Statistics in a Data Analyst career?
A: It's crucial. Not all problems need machine learning—many can be solved through statistical techniques. If coding isn’t your strong suit, having statistical knowledge is a strong alternative.
Q10: And what about Python and SQL—how important are they?
A: Extremely important. Python and SQL are the backbone of data analysis tasks. They form the foundation of data extraction, transformation, and model building.
