A Journey from Fresher to Data Analyst: Sherin Shana

In a data-driven world, the tales of individuals who successfully transition into data-related roles from non-technical backgrounds serve as both a source of inspiration and valuable insights. Envision the journey of moving from a non-technical background to becoming a skilled Data Analyst—what obstacles could one encounter? How can someone traverse the intricacies of data science without any prior expertise?

Guiding Recent Graduates Toward Becoming Data Analysts

Moving from a state of inexperience to becoming a skilled Data Analyst demands a well-organized and directed process. Those new to the field of data analysis often encounter challenges, ranging from getting a grip on essential tools to unravelling intricate techniques. Yet, with the appropriate guidance and resources, this path becomes manageable, allowing newcomers to grasp the subtleties of data analytics and thrive in their practical applications in real-life situations.

Introducing Sherin Shana, a fresher from Kerela who completed her master’s in Physics from Cochin University of Science and Technology. After her post-graduation, she moved to Bangalore and joined DataMites for data science courseBeing a complete beginner in the field of data analytics she made her first career transition as a data analyst in Proziod Analytics, Whitefield.

DataMites interviewed Ms. Sherin to discover the crucial elements that paved the way for his remarkable career transformation. Let’s delve into the insights that guided her impressive shift in her professional path.

Q Sherin, can you give me your academic profile as a fresher?

I’m Sherin from Kerela and I have completed my master’s in Physics from the Cochin University of Science and Technology. After completing my Postgraduate studies, I moved to Bangalore and joined DataMites Data Science Course.

Q Do you have any prior knowledge of Programming?

A. NO, I am an absolute beginner in the programming field but during my master’s, we had some projects where coding was needed so we had to analyse through basic Python code other than that I didn’t write code on my own.

Q Which Batch are you from?

A. I’m a batch of June 2022.

Q When did you get placed?

A. In the middle of the internship projects I got placed in Proziod Analytics, Whitefield.

Q Being not a programmer, how do you feel about learning Python, How much time did it take for you to learn and how difficult was it?

A. In the beginning it felt difficult but later after learning the basics, it became quite easy. Learning programming became easy because the faculty taught us from basic to advanced levels. After attending the classroom practices, I grasped the programming language to understand myself and slowly I adapted the Python skills.

Q What was the duration and how many weeks did you spend before you got comfortable with Python?

A. In the beginning stage, I used to practice a lot and after starting with statistics and machine learning, I am simultaneously learning Python. So, it took four weeks to completely stabilise myself with the knowledge of Python. Starting from absolute zero programming knowledge to becoming comfortable with Python took me a proper 1 month.

Q How much time did you spend apart from attending classroom sessions?

A. After 2 and ½ hours of classroom training, I spent 3 hours on self-study by practising the same topic through elements and YouTube videos. The elements I referred to were DataMites Learning Management Systems.

Q What do you feel about Statistics even when it is a non-background profile for you?

A. Yeah, in terms of Physics I know it as numbers and graphs but in the case of Python, it was a new concept. Since I was dealing with statistics as numbers and graphs It was easy for me to get into that. Statistics I didn’t feel much difficulty as I referred to many books on it. I used practical statistics for data science and other books from YouTube online tutorial videos.

Q How do you feel learning machine learning?

A. It seems to be a difficult part of the whole course to understand the concept of machine learning. Even I have difficulty understanding the terms so I am researching and learning. While having the classroom sessions, we discuss the topics to understand the core depth of the machine learning course

Q Who was your trainer?

A. Mr. Nikhil Hedge who helped me get through the course.

Q What are the projects you came into while studying in DataMites?

A. The project I came across was Hard Predictions and Time Series Forecasting for COVID-19 it’s about estimating the number of COVID-19 cases.

Q How many interviews you have attended?

DataMites placement assistant helped me through an Interview and I got selected for my first job as a data analyst at Proziod Analytics.

Q What are the topics discussed during the interview?

A. The interview was short and they took two rounds of interview for me. The first round took one hour to complete whereas the second round was a video-assessment round. In the first round, they asked about my educational background and the skills I possess from data science course. They also throw light on my internship areas and what I have done with my projects. Later, they asked about the approach I had chosen to sort the problems by using the least amount of data and since it was a data analyst role, they mainly asked about my statistical concepts and Ideapad which I have covered during my projects. I was asked how I could convert the bigger labs and information in a better way and also a few concepts regarding data visualization.

Q Which questions do you find tough to answer?

A. It was quite a flexible interview and the main motive of the interviewer was to check the aspirants’ confidence which I didn’t lack. They were checking if the aspirants were answering boldly or not so for me it was quite a flow.

Q Have you referred any other materials apart from DataMites?

A. I referred to online tutorials available on Google and YouTube.
