Adheeka’s Data Science Journey with DataMites Institute

Discover how Adheeka transformed from a fresher to a Data Scientist through dedication, skill-building, and expert guidance from DataMites.

Q1: Can you start by telling our audience a bit about yourself?

I’m Adheeka, an Electronics and Communication Engineering graduate. I completed my B.Tech in January 2024 and joined DataMites Institute in April 2024. Recently, I cleared the interview for a Data Science Intern role at Sirpi. It’s been a great journey so far.

Q2: Why did you choose to shift to Data Science and AI instead of sticking to your core field?

During my engineering, we had an optional subject where I chose Python. That sparked my interest in coding and AI. Around my 5th semester, AI tools like ChatGPT were making waves, and I was fascinated by how AI was transforming industries. I wanted to contribute to this revolution, which led me to Data Science.

Q3: What were the crucial topics you focused on for your Data Science role?

The key areas were Python, Statistics, Machine Learning, AI concepts, and SQL. I believe having strong Python coding skills is vital because interviews always test that. Next is understanding the algorithms behind each model — statistics and the logic that drive these models.

Q4: Did you have prior programming experience before joining DataMites?

Yes, I had some Python and C++ exposure during my degree, but I wasn’t an expert. DataMites Institute helped me build those skills systematically. Transitioning from Electronics to Data Science wasn’t easy, but structured learning made it achievable.

Q5: Everyone talks about AI replacing jobs. As a Data Science enthusiast, what’s your take?

AI will certainly automate some jobs, but it will also create many new opportunities. We can’t resist technology; instead, we should evolve with it. Learning to work alongside AI is essential for career growth.

Q6: Many freshers ask us how important SQL is besides Python. What’s your opinion?

SQL is quite important. Most job postings mention it. You don’t need to master everything, but having medium-level SQL knowledge helps a lot, especially for data handling tasks.

Q7: Your resume can make or break your chances. How did you structure your resume to stand out?

Initially, my resume was very basic. But with DataMites PAT (Placement Assistance Team) guidance, I improved it significantly. The format included:

  • Name and contact details
  • Experiences
  • Educational qualifications
  • Projects with detailed bullet points including:
    • Project goals
    • Key outcomes
    • Challenges faced
    • How those challenges were overcome
    • Real-world applications of the projects
  • Skills and tools
  • Certifications

Mentioning how I tackled project challenges helped differentiate me from others.

Q8: Many wonder how much daily time commitment is needed for success. How did you manage your studies?

I didn’t have a fixed schedule, but on average, I spent 2-3 hours daily, excluding the 2-hour DataMites classes. Self-research, exploring AI tools, and practicing coding helped me a lot. Consistent self-study alongside classes is crucial.

Q9: How did projects help you during interviews?

Projects are essential. Interviewers always ask how you applied your knowledge. I included both my college projects and DataMites capstone projects in my resume. Explaining the project outcomes, use cases, and technical approach showed my practical understanding.

Q10: You opted for online classes. How was your experience?

The online mode was perfect for me. Although I stay in Bangalore, traveling to Electronic City wasn’t feasible. The online sessions were interactive, and I could clarify doubts easily. It gave me flexibility without compromising on quality.

Q11: Tell us about your interview challenges. Any memorable moments?

My first interview was tough. They asked me to build a chatbot from scratch, but I didn’t have my laptop, so I had to use theirs. That was tricky, but I managed to code something. Though I didn’t clear that interview, I learned a lot. Luckily, I cracked my second interview and secured the internship at Sirpi.

Q12: Apart from resume help, did the PAT team assist with interviews?

Yes, they provided mock interviews — I attended three of them — and shared materials for client interviews. Their support boosted my confidence and improved my performance.

Q13: How long did it take for you to complete the course and land your opportunity?

Six months — that included coursework, projects, capstones, and mock interviews. It was intensive but manageable.
