Apoorva’s Journey into Data Science with DataMites

From curious beginner to confident data scientist, here's how Apoorva made it happen with DataMites.

Q1: Can you briefly introduce yourself and your educational background?

I’m Apoorva, a Computer Science Engineering graduate. After my graduation, I wanted to specialize in data, so I enrolled in the Certified Data Scientist course at DataMites, Bangalore in December 2023. I developed strong skills in Python, Machine Learning, Statistics, and SQL through the program and am now working as a Data Engineer at BDB.ai.

Q2: What motivated you to pursue a career in data science and data engineering?

I’ve always been interested in data-related fields. That curiosity and passion for working with data motivated me to join the DataMites Certified Data Scientist program.

Q3: Did you take the course online or offline?

I attended the offline classroom sessions in Bangalore. Being physically present helped me stay focused and collaborate more closely with peers.

Q4: What were the most challenging subjects, and how did you overcome them?

Coming from a CS background, Python and SQL were relatively easy. I found Machine Learning and Statistics more challenging. To overcome this, I studied consistently, revised the basics often, and discussed doubts with my peers and mentors.

Q5: How much time did you dedicate to studying daily?

I spent about 1 hour daily after classes to revise and practice. Additionally, I engaged in discussions with friends at the institute, which helped reinforce my understanding.

Q6: What was your experience with projects and internships during the course?

I worked in a group of three on four capstone projects. These helped us apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. My client project was focused on Sales Effectiveness, where we worked on lead scoring.

Q7: When did you start preparing for interviews and how did you perform in mock interviews?

After completing the projects, I gave a mock interview and cleared it on the first attempt. I then began applying for roles, focusing specifically on Bangalore-based companies.

Q8: How many job interviews did you attend, and what did you learn from them?

I attended three interviews before securing my current job. My first interview was a learning experience because I wasn’t fully prepared. Each interview taught me something new, especially where I needed to improve in statistics and machine learning.

Q9: What kind of questions were asked in your final successful interview?

The interview had one round where I was asked about SQL basics, Python coding, and some data analytics concepts. It was more technical and project-oriented.

Q10: Who were your mentors at DataMites, and how did they help?

My mentors were Kalpana Ma'am, Shruti Ma'am, and Seema Ma'am. They taught Python, statistics, and machine learning, and also helped during doubt-clearing sessions.

Q11: Was becoming a Data Engineer your first choice?

Actually, I was aiming for a Data Scientist role but accepted the Data Engineer position at BDB.ai. I see it as a great starting point and a stepping stone toward my long-term goals.

Q12: What advice do you have for aspiring data professionals?

Stay consistent. Keep revising the basics, work on projects, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Discussing concepts with peers helps solidify understanding.

Q13: How did the placement team support you in your job search?

The DataMites placement team helped me build my resume and provided a standard format to follow. I applied through their support for Bangalore-based roles and attended interviews facilitated by them.

Q14: Did you try applying to companies outside of the placement support system?

Yes, I tried platforms like LinkedIn but didn’t receive much response. Most of my interview opportunities came through DataMites.

Q15: What is your current experience working at BDB.ai?

It’s going well. I’m currently in the training phase and learning a lot. The environment is supportive, and I'm excited about what lies ahead.
