Karthik's Career Shift to Data Science: A Growth Journey with DataMites
Discover how Karthik transitioned from electronics to data science, driven by passion and perseverance. With the support of DataMites, he turned his aspirations into real-world success.
Q1: Can you briefly introduce yourself and your background?
I'm from Bangalore and completed my Engineering in Electronics and Communication in 2021. I worked as an analyst for about 1.3 years in a technology company before switching to data science. I’ve recently completed the Data Science course and internship at DataMites and am currently awaiting final formalities for a data-related role.
Q2: What inspired you to transition into data science?
From the very beginning of my career, I was inclined toward becoming a data scientist. I realized early that mastering tools like Python and machine learning concepts would be essential. Although I initially pursued a different job to gain some work experience, I later returned to Bangalore due to personal reasons and joined DataMites to pursue this goal seriously.
Q3: How did you find the learning experience at DataMites?
It was a very good experience. The course exceeded my expectations. I improved my technical understanding and also gained soft skills — like how to present myself, speak confidently in interviews, and interact professionally. The faculty was helpful, especially when it came to explaining complex concepts like machine learning models and AI topics. I also benefited from exposure to research-based learning and practical implementation.
Q4: Were you new to programming when you started? How did you manage that?
I had a basic understanding of programming, but it wasn’t strong. The course helped bridge that gap. I practiced a lot — both theoretically and practically. Implementing concepts like machine learning models and coding alongside the coursework helped me build confidence gradually.
Q5: Did you follow any personal study routines or additional resources?
Yes. Apart from the course materials, I used to watch YouTube videos, read AI-related blogs, and reflect on the real-world implications of AI — whether it is improving life or creating ethical challenges. These reflections helped me stay connected with the broader purpose of data science.
Q6: How important was networking and platforms like LinkedIn in your journey?
LinkedIn was a game-changer. It helped me stay in touch with trends, gather tips from posts, and connect with professionals. While I didn’t get direct referrals from LinkedIn, the platform enabled meaningful discussions that helped me prepare better for interviews and industry expectations.
Q7: Tell us about your projects. Did they play a role in your interviews?
Absolutely. Most interviewers focused heavily on my projects. They wanted to know which models I used, how I handled data processing, and my approach to problem-solving. I worked on team projects, where we divided tasks like feature engineering and model evaluation. We would regroup regularly to discuss findings and improve our implementation — this collaborative approach was key.
Q8:How did the DataMites placement team support you?
They were extremely helpful — especially with resume building. Initially, my resume was four pages long! The team helped me trim it down to what was relevant, improving the chances of getting shortlisted. In terms of interviews, I would receive one to three interview calls per day, depending on the companies' timelines.
Q9: What was your interview experience like, and what do companies usually seek in candidates?
Interviewers look beyond technical knowledge — they assess confidence and clarity of communication. It's important to explain complex topics in simple, layman terms. I was also asked about various tools and concepts like SQL, Excel, and statistics — even if they weren’t in the job description. So, my advice is: don’t just prepare for the JD (Job Description) — prepare based on your resume.
Q10: How did mock interviews help you prepare?
Mock interviews were essential. They test whether you've actually understood the concepts taught in the course. Practicing mock interviews boosted my confidence, improved my articulation, and made me better at handling unexpected questions. Supplementing this with external learning from blogs and videos also gave me a broader perspective.
Q11: What role will you be stepping into, and what are you most excited about?
Though the company hasn’t disclosed the exact project yet, I’ve been informed I could be involved in data visualization, data processing, model development, or deployment. I’m excited to apply my skills and continue learning in real-world scenarios.
Q12: What advice do you have for aspiring data scientists starting today?
Stay updated with industry trends. Use platforms like LinkedIn and YouTube to constantly learn. Algorithms on these platforms will automatically show you more relevant content as you engage with them. Keep practicing and never stop learning — especially in a field as dynamic as AI and data science.
