Journey from Mechanical Engineering to Data Science Career

Imagine embarking on a journey that takes you from Mechanical Engineering to Data Science, opening doors to an exciting and fulfilling career. Transitioning between these fields might raise some interesting questions. How do you connect these seemingly different areas? Which engineering skills can be useful in the data-driven world? Is this transition based on instinct or a planned progression? So, here’s the main question:

How can you smoothly move from Mechanical Engineering to Data Science?

Meet Roshan Betediya, an inspiring example of breaking traditional career paths. Roshan’s story is linked with DataMites, where he took data science training that helped him shift from an engineer to a successful data scientist. This change wasn’t random; he had mentors who guided him, connecting his engineering background with the changing world of data science.

We had a talk with Roshan about how he transformed his career trajectory from a mechanical engineer to a data scientist at Amazon.

Q) Hello, Roshan, we shall start by introducing yourself.

Hello, my name is Roshan, and I’m from Chennai. I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate. I acquired a job in core economics after college. But I wanted to work in IT, so I looked for some decent courses that would help me get a job in the area and found DataMites Institute. DataMites had a lot of positive feedback, so I decided to enrol in DataMites’ most sought-after data science courses. I also worked as a data scientist intern at Rubixe, an AI business. Now I have a job at Amazon, which I am quite proud of.

Q) How was your overall learning experience at DataMites?

I took DataMites’ online data science programme and had an incredible learning experience. As a newcomer to data science, the mentors at DataMites started from the beginning and taught me everything there is to know about data science. The sessions were really participatory and felt almost like they were taking place in a real-time classroom.

Q) Who was your trainer at DataMites?

My lead trainer was Deepa ma’am. We were provided plenty of study materials, and the instruction was quite effective. She offered us multiple projects and followed up on all of our questions with doubt-clearing sessions, which were quite beneficial to me.

Q) How much time did you spend learning data science on a daily basis?

Actually, I spent 8 to 10 hours per day studying for my course. I emphasised mastering the fundamentals in order to establish a solid basis for my course. In order to be competent in machine learning and other sophisticated technologies, I also spent a lot of time practising math and statistics.

Q) What are your thoughts on the common misunderstanding that data science necessitates programming?

The DataMites data science courses are well-crafted, and the one I chose was the certified data scientist introductory level course. Because the training is geared for beginners, there was no need to be concerned about not understanding programming languages because we were taught from the ground up. I was able to gain proper programming language skills after the course.

Q) What helped you get a job?

Actually, having internships helped me so much in building my resume and getting a job. We get roughly 4 to 5 capstone projects and 1 real-time project during data science internships. When applying for a job, the first thing to do is read the job description carefully to understand what the firm is looking for in a candidate and format our resume accordingly. I applied for almost 100 jobs on various job boards before landing this position at Amazon.

Q) How did the data science certification help?

After my training from DataMites, I received the IABAC certification that is from the Netherlands and the most weighted piece of my entire resume that has caught the attention of interviewers yet.

Q) What are your thoughts on data science as a domain for people who have solely studied computer science?

That is a major misunderstanding right there. I personally come from a mechanical background now found a career in data science. So anyone can do this. Data Science isn’t just for computer science students but anyone who genuinely aspires and wishes to upskill themself to work in this exciting field.
