Journey from Mechanical Engineering to Data Science Career

In the ever-evolving landscape of career transitions, the journey from a mechanical engineer to a data science professional raises intriguing questions: Can knowledge be seamlessly transferred across disciplines? How does one bridge the gap between engineering and data analytics? Pavan Kumar’s journey into the world of data science began with his pursuit of comprehensive data science training at DataMites, an institute known for its proficiency in nurturing data science talents. The structured curriculum and hands-on experience provided by DataMites played a pivotal role in enabling Pavan to seamlessly channel his engineering expertise into the realm of data science.

How to Switch into a Data Science Career from Mechanical Engineering?

Transitioning from mechanical engineering to data science demands a strategic approach. It involves recognizing transferable skills, upskilling through targeted education, and showcasing adaptability. Individuals seeking such a transition can benefit from programs like those offered by DataMites, where specialized data science courses bridges the knowledge gap and equips them with the necessary tools for success in the data-driven world.

Pavan‘s dedication and commitment to his data science journey culminated in a significant achievement – securing a position as an Associate Engineer in Data Science at L&T Technology Services Limited. His career switch underscores the rewards of resilience, continuous learning, and embracing change in pursuit of new career horizons. DataMites engaged in an interview with Mr. Pavan to extract the pivotal elements behind his career transition. Let’s unravel the secrets that paved the way for his remarkable professional shift.

Q) Hello, Pavan. Let’s start with what aroused your interest in data science.

When I was in my third year of engineering, I had a basic understanding of programming, specifically python. It was my Python studies that lead me to this new field of “data science.” I did a lot of research on different institutes and came to the conclusion that DataMites of all institutes had the course curriculum in the format I desired. As a result, I chose to enrol in the Certified Data Scientist Course, which was designed just for data science newbies like myself.

Q) Could you tell us about your DataMites learning experience?

First and foremost, I’d want to express my gratitude to everyone on the DataMites team, particularly my mentors Ashok sir and Hemanth sir, as well as the placement aid team. After starting the sessions, I saw that my mentors’ explanations, the assignments we were given, and the projects were all excellent in terms of offering a thorough understanding of the subject.

Q) Did you have any prior experience with Python before enrolling in the course?

Yes, before attending the institute, I had completed a python course. However, python was not the only subject covered in the programming section; we also studied arithmetic and advanced pythons like NumPy and the panda’s libraries. Because I come from a mechanical background, it was completely foreign to me. To get the hang of it, I had to put in a lot of practice time.

Q) How was the process of getting the job?

While doing the DataMites internship, I began seeking employment. In roughly 7 months, I had 7 interviews and by January 2022, I had landed a job with L&T as an associate engineer in data science after the 8th one. I’d want to express my gratitude to DataMites’ Placement Assistance Team for assisting me in so many ways throughout my job search.

Q) How was your experience with the PAT?

We had mock interviews planned by the Placement Assistance Team before going into interviews, and I attended three to four of them. This method prepared me for the upcoming interviews by providing me with practice attending them and teaching me what areas I needed to work on. I’d want to express my gratitude to the team, which is led by Farzana ma’am. They scheduled me for 7 or 8 interviews after that and each of them provided me with invaluable experience and showed me new ways to improve myself, and I was able to land my current job.

Q) How do you prepare for an interview?

I used to apply for jobs on LinkedIn, and the DataMites PAT  helped me in many aspects. Attending mock interviews was made easier with the support of the team. PAT helped me get my current position, which I am really grateful for.

Q) What are your thoughts on the popular belief that persons with mechanical backgrounds are unable to pursue careers in data science?

I had a strong desire to work in the field of information technology during my college years. When I first learned about data science, I was completely enthralled by how the profession operates. It was a domain that was linked to a slew of other domains and cutting-edge technologies, so I was fully prepared to plunge into the world of

Q) What kind of training would you recommend for someone who is just getting started in the field?

DataMites training programmes are available both online and offline. As a result of the pandemic, more students are opting for online data science sessions, which are just as successful as classroom sessions, with more and more interactions, group activities, and other features! It doesn’t matter which training method you use; what matters is your enthusiasm for the subject and desire to learn more and gain mastery in the domain.
